Heal With Grace: Reflection
Today I had the honor of attending the “Heal With Grace” webinar, presented by the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) and the Grace Holland Cozine Foundation. “Heal With Grace” brought a community of loved ones together to honor those we have lost to eating disorders. As I have mentioned before, I lost my big sister, Samantha, ten years ago to anorexia and bulimia nervosa. This event was very special, and I want to thank NEDA and Grace’s family for putting it together. I also want to add a big thank-you to everyone who donated! Together, we all raised $55,888 to help NEDA further their mission into creating preventions, education, and advocacy around eating disorders. This event gave me a lot of hope for the future of eating disorder prevention, and hope that one day no one else will have to suffer a loss like my family did.
NEDA is working hard to implement prevention, cures, and access to quality care for all people who suffer from eating disorders. As part of their work, they are looking to get the Eating Disorders Prevention in Schools Act of 2020 passed. Below is more information about the act, and how you can help us in the preventative care of eating disorders for generations to come.
The Eating Disorders Prevention in Schools Act of 2020:
This act would encourage schools to include eating disorder prevention within their Local School Wellness Policies. In those policies, schools will be able to implement more supportive nutritional and physical activity environments by including adequate guidelines about disordered eating and eating disorders.
This legislation is very important to me, as it’s a catalyst to get the conversation going around eating disorders, and for early prevention. This legislative act will help raise awareness around eating disorders and decrease stigma around them. It will also help kids to engage in better relationships with food and exercise. I strongly believe that if a program like this was implemented when Samantha was in school, it could’ve helped save her life.
We need your help and support to get this legislation into law! Below I have included a link to NEDA’s website that generates an email to send to your local Representative. All you need to do is enter your name and street address, and the website will do the rest for you. There is also more information about the Eating Disorders Prevention in Schools Act of 2020 on this page. I urge you to do this, as it will help millions of kids like Samantha in the United States for generations to come.
